Sewing Saturday

It's been a pretty busy week with little sewing involved. I did finish up the cloth diapers for a friend and shipped them out on Tuesday. I also sewed A two diapers this week. The pictures are still on my camera so I will show them another time. Here are the ones I just finished...

This week I plan on making a car organizer that you hang on the back of one of the front seats. I have some fabric that I purchased from Walmart for $1/yrd. I used some of it to make cloth shopping bags for when David's trips to Aldis. But I have enough that I am going to try this. I thought it would be helpful for our trip to Washington in 11 days. Did I mention we were going to Washington State. David's brother is getting married and we decided to take a 2 1/2 week vacation there...we are very excited!!

Here is where I got the pattern and tutorial for the car organizer.

This look super easy and I'm hoping to whip it up this week. Take a look and see if it is something you would like to sew.

Recipe Tuesday

Always trying to make the perfect pie crust and it never seems to work out...try this one.

Enjoy!

Master 3-2-1 Flaky Pie Dough

1⁄2 pound (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter

2 1⁄2 c all-purpose flour

2 Tbsp sugar

1 tsp salt

1⁄2 c ice water

1⁄2 tsp white wine vinegar or Champagne vinegar

1. Cut the butter into 1 inch pieces and place it in the freezer to chill for 15 minutes
2. Sift together the flour and sugar into the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Sifting eliminates lumps and aerates the mixture, making the dough tenderer and lighter. Add the partially frozen butter and the salt. Mix on low speed for 2 minutes, or until the butter is reduced to the size of broken walnut meats. Stop the machine and by hand pinch flat any large pieces of butter that remain
3. Combine the ice water and vinegar in a small bowl. Turn the mixer on low speed and add the liquid all at once. Mix just until the dough comes together, about 15 seconds. The dough should be tacky but not sticky.
4. Remove the dough from the bowl and wrap it in plastic film. Do not squeeze the dough together or overwork it. Chill for at least 1 hour. At this point, the dough will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for 3 weeks. For freezing, however, I prefer to roll it out into sheets and wrap them airtight in plastic film first.
5. To blind-bake… place aluminum foil in pie crust and fill with dry beans for weight. Preheat oven to 425*. Adjust the rack to the lower third of the oven. Prick the bottom of the pastry a few times with a fork. Bake for 10 minutes, then turn the heat down to 350* and bake for 10 more minutes.
6. Remove from the oven and remove the faux filling and the lining. Bake for 10 more minutes or until center is golden brown. There should be no sign of moisture. Remove from the oven and cool in the pan on a rack.

Sewing Saturday

I found a great tutorial on line and wanted to share it with you all.

http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=170402.0

This is to change a button down dress shirt into a dress for a child. It's adorable and easy to do. I know that David has had some dress shirts that we have tossed because of stains or they are getting wore out and thin. But with this tutorial you can change it into a dress for a child. I can't wait ti try this (now if I could only talk David into letting me have one of his dress shirts). :)

I'm thinking I might have to make a quick visit to a thrift store soon to see what I can come up with.

David was teasing today b/c now I will want all his button down dress shirts. I aready use all of his old t-shirts for the insides of the cloth diapers I make for Annika.

While I was looking at the website I also found a tutorial where you could take the sleeves from the shirt and make some matching pants to go with the outfit. This tutorial can be found at:

So if you get bored and want to give it try! Have a great time and let me know!

New Project

I couldn't wait until Saturday to share this, so I'm going to share it now (good thing this is my blog and I can do what I want). :)

I am a HUGE fan of garage sales...I love them! Last week I went to one and this guy had tables and tables full of clothes (all new with the tags), I found some really cute skirts that I like (for A) the only problem was that they didn't have them in her size (they were 5/6 and 7/8). So I decided I would buy one...of each color and try to make them smaller...for $1 each might as well give it a try.

Well I messed with one Saturday Night and it turned out pretty cute. I put it on her for Sunday and got lots of compliments on it.

This is a picture of all the skirts I got (I had already made the brown and pink one smaller the other two are the original size).

Here's a couple of actions shots...I could not get her to sit still unless I gave her the kleenex box. A is obsessed right now with "blowing" her nose (as seen in the last picture).
Oh and I made a hair bow to match with some of the left over material.

New Great Summer Recipe! MMMmmmMMMmmm....

I know that Recipe Tuesday was yesterday and I already posted a recipe....but this one is SUPER GOOD and easy to make.

As I was in the process of making 2 lasagnas yesterday (one large one for us to enjoy with guests over and two small one for 2 families in our church). As I was baking I remembered that I had a cake mix that was open but unused (I checked to see if it was a white cake mix since it wasn't in the box if my mind serves me right the box got wet and we tossed it out) well it ended up being a lemon cake mix. So I thought I might as well use this up so I got online and googled "lemon cake mix" and google took me to:

Cooks.com

There is where I found the recipe for:

LEMON CHEESECAKE BARS:

1 package cake mix, lemon
1/3 cup butter, softened
1 egg
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
2 tablespoons lemon peel, grated (I didn't have any of this so I added just a little more lemon juice about 1/2 tablespoon)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 eggs

Blend dry cake mix, butter, and 1 egg. Press into ungreased 13x9x2 pan.

Beat cream cheese until smooth. Gradually blend in powdered sugar. Stir in peel and lemon juice until smooth. Reserve 1/2 cup; refrigerate. Beat 2 eggs into remaining cheese mixture until blended.

Spread over cake mixture. Bake at 350 F until set, about 25 minutes; cool completely. Spread with reserved cream cheese mixture. Refrigerate until firm.

Serving Size: 12.

I highly recommend this recipe! It is soo good and refreshing a GREAT summer treat!

Try it and Enjoy!!

Sewing Saturday

This week has been a somewhat busy week. We have had a lot going on. I was able to get 3 diapers sewn (for a friend in Montana), I however do not have pictures. Sorry! I have found a pattern online that I want to try for A. It's a cute top and I'm hoping to just make it longer for a dress for her Uncle Geoff and soon to be Aunt Jenny's wedding in just 25 days!

Here's the pattern if you are interested!

Sewing Saturday

Nothing! I have done no sewing this week...I have a few WIPs.

I'm working on a beanie hat for A w/ my knifty knitter and am going to pick up a new little knifty knitter that you can make flowers on (YAY)!

I am also working on 6 cloth diapers for a friend.

A was sick yesterday and still not feeling all that well today (stinky ol' teeth), so I have not taken any pictures of my WIPs. Just know now that I am working on things! :)

Sewing Saturday

I told you last week, that I was working on a quilt for A's room (when we move her to a twin size bed). I'm not finished with it yet (I ran out of white material I need enough to make about 7 more blocks). Then I need to figure out what type of boarder to use. Here's a picture of the way it is looking so far...

This is my one and only sewing project this week. It has been kind of busy here. I can't remember all I did at the beginning, but we did go to a sheep farm on Tuesday, and ran lots of errands on Wednesday then Thursday-Saturday has been our city wide garage sale (I haven't been out yet today, but I'm hoping to go a little later when A wakes up). Have a great weekend!
